Brisbane Software Development & Testing Market Update

COVID-19 has had a major effect on the recruitment of Developers and Testers in the Queensland market.

With everything that’s happening in the world now with the pandemic that is COVID-19, we are seeing a lot of changes within businesses as they adapt to the situation. The technology arms of many businesses are somewhat lucky in the way that staff are able to work from home without any significant effect on their output, however the impact on their revenues and ability to conduct business has in some instance been dramatic. It is safe to assume that until this pandemic has come to an end we will see the market for developers and testers affected as businesses tighten up on non-essential and new projects.

Over the past few weeks, I have been speaking with tech leaders within a multitude of businesses to understand what they have set in place already and what their future plans are regarding COVID-19. The approaches have varied by industry as some have been more affected than others.  There has been a large number of redundancies from travel companies based in Australia, and unsurprisingly this would have to be one of the industries hit hardest by the pandemic. On the other hand, I have spoken with some insurance companies that are saying that they are yet to see any effect and may actually be doing better during this period.

It is great to see that some companies are continuing to hire for their technology teams. Leaders and businesses in certain sectors have adapted to the situation by not letting the pandemic prevent hiring. Now with video conferencing becoming the norm for most businesses, leaders are happy to interview and hire people without having to meet them in person. With the success that this has had so far we could see a change post COVID-19 where VC’s feature as a more normal part of the recruitment process.

At Emanate, our own roles have changed significantly by becoming even more about informing candidates and clients about what we are seeing and hearing within the IT market. This knowledge sharing helps them plan as best they can for the future. It is imperative that we speak with as many people as possible at the moment so we can give regular insights to our clients and candidates, both existing and new.
